Our guide to Cyprus

Whether you're seeking beaches with crystal-clear waters, ancient ruins, or a vibrant nightlife, Cyprus has something for everyone. Cyprus is the third biggest island in the Mediterranean and enjoys around 340 sunny days per year and is one of the hottest countries in Europe.

Tips for planning your trip:

  • The best time to visit Cyprus is during the shoulder season of the peak summer heat during the months of May, June, September and October.

  • English is widely spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few basic Greek phrases will go a long way.

  • Renting a car is by far the best way to get around the island, but public transportation is also available.

  • Most tourist destinations are in The Republic of Cyprus (Greek Cypriot), which occupies the south. The north is the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Our Favourite Part of Cyprus - The Beaches

Cyprus boasts over 500km of coastline, offering a mix of beaches from rugged more secluded coastline to picturesque white sand beaches. We found that the best beaches are in the South-East (Paralimni region) and Western most Peninsula (Polis Region). If you are after beach clubs, white sandy beaches, coastal development and more nightlife then we recommend the East Coast beaches surrounding Aya Napa. If you are seeking more rugged coastline without the crowds and with less coastal development then we reccommend the West-Coast.

  • For the party people: Ayia Napa's Nissi Beach pulsates with energy, while Protaras offers a vibrant yet family-friendly vibe. Be sure to check out the Ayia Napa sea caves and Kamara tou Koraka bridge!

  • For the adventure junkies: Windsurfing in Larnaca Bay, scuba diving amidst shipwrecks and ancient ruins, or kayaking through sea caves will get your adrenaline pumping.

  • For the serenity seekers: Blue Lagoon in Akamas National Park really lives up to it’s name with some of the bluest water we’ve ever seen! Read on to learn more about this must-see spot.

The Blue Lagoon in Akamas National Park is known for its crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming and snorkelling, and its secluded location, making it a true paradise for nature lovers.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Remote and serene: This Blue Lagoon is a hidden gem, accessible only by boat or 4x4. You can take a boat trip from Latchi, a small village near Paphos. The journey takes about 30 minutes. If you get there early you'll likely have the beach to yourself or share it with a few others before the tour groups arrive.

  • Perfect for swimming and snorkelling: The waters are calm and shallow, making it ideal for a refreshing dip or exploring the underwater world with a mask and snorkel.

  • Natural beauty: The surrounding scenery is stunning, with cliffs, caves, and lush vegetation. If you’re lucky you might even spot some turtles!

  • What to bring: Be sure to pack sunscreen, a hat, swimsuit, towel, and water. You may also want to bring snacks and drinks, as there are no shops or restaurants near the lagoon.

Where to stay:

Choosing where to stay in Cyprus depends on what kind of experience you're looking for!

For Beach Bums:

  • Ayia Napa: Party central! Stunning beaches like Nissi Beach, vibrant nightlife, and plenty of water sports.

  • Protaras & Fig Tree Bay: Family-friendly beaches with calm waters, excellent for snorkeling and swimming. More relaxed atmosphere than Ayia Napa.

  • Larnaca: Sandy beaches, historical sites like Hala Sultan Tekke, and convenient access to Larnaca Airport. Larnaca has many lively beach bars and restaurants along Mckenzie Beach, traditional taverns in the old town, and nightlife options to suit all tastes.

  • Coral Bay (near Paphos): Beautiful beach with water sports options, family-friendly hotels, and stunning sunsets.

For History Buffs:

  • Paphos: UNESCO-listed Paphos Archaeological Park with Roman mosaics and Tomb of the Kings, medieval Paphos Castle, and nearby Aphrodite's Baths. There are a wide range of restaurants serving fresh seafood, local specialties, and international cuisine, bars with live music, and nightclubs.

  • Nicosia: Divided city with unique political history, explore both the Greek and Turkish sides, museums, and charming old town.

  • Kourion: Ancient Greco-Roman city ruins with amphitheater, stunning coastal views, and historical significance.

For a Peaceful Escape:

  • Akamas Peninsula National Park: Untouched nature with hiking trails, secluded coves like the Blue Lagoon, and traditional villages offering authentic Cypriot experiences.

  • Troodos Mountains: Charming villages with stone houses, traditional crafts, stunning mountain scenery, and hiking trails with breathtaking views.

  • Polis: Quaint town with a slow pace of life, surrounded by citrus groves, traditional tavernas, and easy access to the Akamas Peninsula.

Indulge in a feast for the senses

Cypriot cuisine is a delightful blend of Greek and Turkish influences, bursting with fresh flavors and local ingredients. Sample succulent meze platters, savor dips like hummus and tahini, and don't miss the star of the show: halloumi cheese, grilled to perfection.

Journey through time and legend

Beyond the beaches, Cyprus is a treasure trove of history and myth. Step back in time at the UNESCO-listed Tombs of the Kings, marvel at the Roman mosaics in Paphos, or wander through the ancient city of Kourion, where gladiatorial battles once unfolded.

  • Climb Mount Olympus: Hike to the top of the highest peak in Cyprus and be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views.

  • Explore Nicosia, the divided city: Cross the Green Line and delve into the complexities of Cyprus's political history.

Remember:

  • Travel times: Consider how far you want to be from the airport and major attractions.

  • Budget: Different areas cater to different budgets, with Paphos and Limassol being generally more expensive than Protaras or Latchi.

  • Travel season: Peak season (July-August) brings crowds and higher prices. Shoulder seasons (April-June and September-October) offer more pleasant weather and better deals.

No matter what your interests are, there's a perfect spot in Cyprus waiting for you! We hope this blog has inspired you to add Cyprus to your travel bucket list. With its stunning beaches, rich history, and delicious cuisine, this island paradise is sure to leave you enchanted.
